L.B. Wells
L.B. Wells is the pseudonym of a very successful Board-Certified Surgeon, an ambitious physician who overcame the resistance of the male-dominated world of surgery to become successful. The pseudonym gives her the freedom to explore the raw truths of her life, including the male prejudices that made her life so difficult. Wells has written a novel entitled, “The White Coat Effect,” that unleashes the ambition necessary for a woman to push through the long road to becoming an esteemed surgeon while discovering sexuality and forbidden love for the first time.
What’s the difference (at least for you!) between being a writer and an author? How do you shift gears between the two?
Thank you for the interesting question. My viewpoint is that all authors are writers but not all writers are authors. A writer writes for pleasure or for an audience, but publishing is not necessarily a goal. As an author, one has to write both for themselves and an audience, as the goal of an author is generally publication and to connect with that audience.
Are there particular films that have influenced your writing?
For this particular book, I was heavily influenced by West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, South Pacific, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?, The Bodyguard, films and/or shows that tackle miscegenation (interracial relationships).
Do you have another artistic outlet in addition to your writing? Do you sew? Paint? Draw? Knit? Dance?
I play several musical instruments and compose music. As a surgeon, art is embedded into my work. And I LOVE to dance.
Not all books are for all readers… when you start a book and you just don’t like it, how long do you read until you bail?
I generally give a book 50 pages to hook me. If by then, I'm not entertained or intrigued, I will stop reading that particular book.
Is there another profession you would like to try?
I would love to try acting. I've recently become interested in the tech world. Other than that, I'm living most of my dreams just by taking the steps to turn them into reality!
