Are there particular films that have influenced your writing?

I adore film as it’s just storytelling in a visual form. I especially love creative, innovative, original ideas, so I’m a huge Quentin Tarantino fan for his vision, originality, good banter, ability to leverage music and pop culture, and playfulness. He breaks rules and convention and has been a pleasure to watch.

Favorite non-reading activity?

I love being outdoors, and especially nature, so I enjoy hiking mountains, kayaking, and just being outside in general. This year I was fortunate to explore Arizona and the Northeast of the US, and both were a bounty of stunning views and interesting natural wonders. I am very blessed to live in a Wildlife Management Area with few residents and lots of bears, raccoons, otters, owls, muskrats and beavers, bobcats, coyotes, turtles, birds and more!

Not all books are for all readers…when you start a book and you don’t like it, how long do you read until you bail?

It can happen very quickly nowadays, especially when I realize the writing craft just isn’t there. I know that within a few pages. If it’s a story issue, lagging pace, or I’m not connecting with the characters, I also bail out. Life is too short to not enjoy what you’re reading, and there are billions of books now to choose from. I do appreciate that there are books for every reader. There are some exceptions. I stuck with a complicated world building book by an author I like because I was assured by so many readers it would improve, and it did (but I had to invest 200 pages first!).

Is there another profession you would like to try?

I love photography and film, so pursuing those professionally has always appealed to me. I do a lot of amateur photography and making videos on TikTok fills a teeny, tiny part of me that enjoys producing a “short film.” I keep hoping one or more of my books will someday be picked up for film and I’ll get to be a part of that.

What’s the difference between being a writer and an author?

I wrote for a variety of publications, including a long stint as editorial columnist, before I started writing books, mostly to see if I had the chops to do it and could grow in my craft, and also because it used to give you veracity and legitimacy as a writer with literary agents (not so much anymore with the advent of social media).
