Have you ever experienced Imposter Syndrome?

Oddly enough, I never suffered Imposter Syndrome early in my publishing career. This may indicate that ignorance of publishing’s demands was bliss. Now that I’ve experienced the great fortune of having books reach the bestseller lists, I swim in self-doubt at the outset of each new writing project. Confidence doesn’t tend to arrive until I’ve written the first chunk of the novel. Even then, you’ll find me clacking away on the keyboard and whispering, “Don’t screw up.”

What brings you great joy?

A productive writing day. Creative chats with my agent or editor. A romantic dinner out with hubby or cheering on our adult children as they reach life goals. Barry and I are lucky to have six kids between us, which probably explains why my books depict family life with all its stress, secrets, and unexpected joy.

Do you have another artistic outlet in addition to your writing?

Gardening and cooking—there’s something about digging in the dirt or creating a luscious dinner that keeps my creative juices flowing. On a related note, I love to tackle revisions to a manuscript by hand, with a colorful array of gel pens. It adds a note of fun to the long slog through developmental edits before a book goes into production.

Is there another profession you would like to try?

Child psychologist, pediatric nurse, special education teacher—how many additional lives may I request? Prior to the adoption, my four children had experienced severe abuse and neglect. Raising them has left me with lasting admiration—and gratitude—for the hardworking professionals in all three fields. It’s no accident that my books explore the themes of healing, forgiveness, and renewal.

Vacation druthers…City or Rural destination? Why?

Park me on an island with a great hotel, great spa, and delicious meals. I love the Marriott in Aruba—we’ve stayed there twice and have begun discussing another possible visit in 2023. Strolling through the surf or decompressing in the spa always spurs my creativity. On our last visit, while under deadline for The Season of Silver Linings, I would rise at dawn and sit amidst the palm trees writing. Sheer heaven.
