Are there particular films that have influenced your writing?
Yes, too many to name, but I love Carl Franklin's adaptation of Walter Mosley's Devil In A Blue Dress. I'm also a fan of Nicholas Winding Refn's adaptation of James Sallis's Drive. Although I wish they didn't change the character of Irene. Also, Chinatown, The Long Goodbye, I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, Casablanca, Bladerunner, A Face in the Crowd, Network, Heat, and Collateral.
Is there a genre of music that influences your writing/thinking? Do you listen to music while you write?
I listen to an array of music, but when I'm writing it typically depends on the scene. I rotate between film scores, dark jazz, soul, hip hop, and 90's grunge rock.
What’s your favorite comic strip or graphic novel?
Batman: The Killing Joke
Not all books are for all readers… when you start a book and you just don’t like it, how long do you read until you bail?
I look at books as master classes. Even books I don't connect to, I try to finish. I can still learn something from reading a 'bad' book, but if it seems impossible to finish, I give it two to three chapters.
Vacation druthers… City or Rural destination? Why?
Rural. I particularly love the less populated Hawaiian islands like Kau'i. The natural beauty is breathtaking and really inspires me to write.
